Back in 1920, (you did ask) things in dentistry were simple. If you could afford it, there were many dentists that could help, and if you could not afford proper treatment, there was a whole raft of establishments that could offer an alternative treatment such as barbers or the local chemist.
This stopped in 1921 when the establishment decided to register dentists after a suitable period of training. However, one caveat was that anyone practising dentistry prior to this date could continue to do so until death.
